Major Federal Nutrition Programs at Risk

Federal nutrition programs are critical to helping families facing hunger. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps families make ends meet by stretching their grocery budgets. Sometimes called “food stamps,” those few SNAP dollars every week make all the difference in the world when it comes to putting nutritious meals on the table.

But the latest federal budget takes direct aim at this program and could result in at least 42 million fewer meals to hungry families each year.

40% of the people who benefit from SNAP are children. Another 25% are seniors, the disabled and vets. The majority of the remainder are working people.

Deliver This Message:

As your constituent and a supporter of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, I’m urging you to stand up for families in need by fighting back against the proposed budget which cuts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Even though SNAP benefits are not enough to feed a family, they help recipients stretch their grocery budgets and put nutritious meals on the table. This program puts food into the hands of some 42 million Americans, almost half of them under the age of 18. Any cuts to SNAP funding would put millions of families at risk, including tens of thousands here at home.

I urge you to oppose any cuts to federal nutrition programs, like SNAP, that will harm families in your community who face hunger
